In this area of the Website, we will include  - over the next three years - more and more information about our Australia section in the Hampshire Archive Collection in the build up to our first ever Ashes Test at the Utilita Bowl in 2027. We also want to recommend some really good books relating to previous Ashes series which we have in our Lending Library for our own HCH Supporters. We hope that our Lending Library Service will become operational from the Archive Room from October 2024. If you have any Ashes books you can donate to our HCH Lending Library, please just drop them off at The Club Shop.

Great Ashes Books

Australia 55

by Alan Ross

Published in 1955

Alan Ross (1922-2001) was a distinguished poet, travel writer, and editor of London Magazine and the Observer. This book Australia 55 offers Ross's unique perspectives on the whole MCC 1954-55 Tour and battle for the Ashes, where England were overwhelmed in Brisbane, but won in Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide to retain the Ashes. Cricket is given, by this great wordsmith, a wide human context and, though the form is primarily a journal of Len Hutton's Ashes winning tour spearheaded by Frank Tyson, the prose is beautifully precise.
