Archive Room Updates

In this section, we will include a record of all our updates, issued on this site as a record of our journey in trying to make Hampshire Cricket Heritage and our Archive Room more accessible for our much valued HCH Supporters

November 2024 Update

Archive Room ready for the Hampshire Members tours with Glen Williams

Donations to HCH from the Price Family

We were delighted that Hampshire's Tim Tremlett was able to hand over to HCH a number of books and pictures (including the one below) which have been donated by the Price family.

The donated Terry Harrison framed picture of Northlands Road with numerous signatures of former Hampshire players who graced the ground.

October 2024 Update

Delivery of the 18th Century Hambledon Screen

Imagine how pleased we were to receive the following e-mail here at HCH in September 2024

Mark Butler and his family have lived for 7 generations in Hambledon, until the house was sold in 2022. One of the more valuable artefacts in the house was a screen with a lot of old score cards, including one when Hambledon defeated the rest of England in 1777, thanks to the skills of the likes of John Small and Richard Nyren. His family has been very concerned that such an important part of cricket’s history should never be lost, particularly as at is still in such good condition. The screen was housed at Lords for some time (back in the 90’s), but the then new curator had different plans, so it was returned to their Hambledon home. Their thought has always been that it remains part of Hampshire history, and Mark therefore contacted Hampshire Cricket Heritage via e-mail last month for us to take custody of it. Not only has the Butler family very kindly donated it to HCH, Mark even dropped it off with us at the Utilita Bowl - see picture of Mark above.  We can't say thank you enough for the culture of giving that now exists towards Hampshire Cricket Heritage and we are only too delighted to take receipt of this unique screen from the extremely generous Butler family. They have also provided information on the screen for us to publish on our Website. The link below takes you to that piece in the Other Items in the Archive Room Collection tab on this site. It includes research from Ian Maun, the notable cricket Historian, who spent many an hour studying the screen for one of his books.

July 2024 Update

Starting to sort out the storage of the Picture and Photo Collection

June 2024 Update

Sam Pothecary's cap is donated by the family to HCH

We are extremely grateful to families of former players, who get in touch with us here at HCH, when they want to donate ephemera to the Archive Collection which we own here at the Utilita Bowl. Glen Williams recently drove west to visit the Pothecary family, who have very kindly donated Sam's cap, which was awarded way back in 1927. It now sits proudly with Championship Winning Pennants and Trophies, balls, medals, signed photos and bats on the far right-hand wall of the Archive Room.

Glen Williams and Ray Stubbington have also set about the task in recent weeks of removing pictures from old frames and then storing them in newly-acquired cabinets - which also needed to be collected, re-assembled and brought up to the Archive Room. These pictures include a number which used to hang in the Pavilion at Northlands Road. Work continues apace, meanwhile, to catalogue every artefact in the collection by the end of this year. We will then have comprehensive asset lists, with accompanying photos of everything in our current collection, hoepfully to be made available for all our loyal HCH Supporters to access on request in 2025.

March 2024 Update

Sorting the HCH Tie Collection

We spent a full day in March 2024 in the Archive Room cataloguing and photographing all the ties in the collection. Given we do not have the space to display everything in our collection in the Archive Room, we are listing all the items in each collection and then storing them. The associated links in these spreadsheets will then take you to the photograph, in this case of each and every tie in the collection. Our aim is to try and and make all these photographs available - by the end of 2025 - to those who will not be able to visit the Archive Room in person, but who are generally interested in particular items of memorabilia associated with Hampshire Cricket.

Our Tie Collection numbers over 100 and we are constantly on the lookout for new acquisitions to our collection. They celebrate many of the trophies won over the past 50 years by Hampshire, as well as marking many of the Benefit Years for individual players. If you have any older ties produced by (or linked to) the Club which are spare, please contact us in the Archive Room at hantscccheritage@gmail.com to let us know. Conversely, we have a large number of spares which will be on sale at our two Book Sales this summer in May and August in the Club Shop.

January 2024 Update

Books, Scorecards, First Day Covers, Autographs and Photos

Over the past few months Glen has been listing and photographing all the Hampshire Benefit Brochures, Biographies, Cricket Grounds Books, Guides and Handbooks, Hambledon and Hampshire History Books, John Arlott collection, Membership Cards, Scrapbooks, Statistical Books on Hampshire Cricket and Wisdens.

Meanwhile Ray has been busy every week listing and cataloguing every photograph in our extensive collection of images. Our aim is to try and have a photo of every player who has represented the club to complement Dave Allen's individual biographies. In addition, Ray has been doing exactly the same for all the Scorecards, First Day Covers and Autographs in our collection.
