125 years ago on Thursday 16th May 1901, Hampshire played against South Africa for the first time. In the game played at Southampton, Hampshire recorded their only ever win over South Africa - by an innings and 51 runs. Against his fellow countryman, the dashing Charles Llewellyn smashed 216 in Hampshire’s 538 (off just 104.5 overs) on Day One, before finishing the game with 4 for 6 in the Tourists second innings.
In the second innings at Aigburth against Lancashire on 12th June 1901, Johnnie Greig carried his bat, making 249* out of 457. His innings included 32 fours and 1 five. Grieg added 113 for the 10th wicket with Charles Robson which was a Hampshire record for that wicket which stood for 10 years.
The best match figures for a Hampshire bowler at Northlands Road in Southampton was 14 for 171 (7 for 77 and 7-94). They were recorded by Charles Llewellyn on Wednesday 3rd July 1901.
